“At St Chad’s we grow in the light of Christ, to share his love and reflect the gospel values”
Literacy learning and teaching covers the areas of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. Children engage in a wide range of activities to develop their skills in all areas alongside focused work on 'phonics' and spelling. At St Chad’s we believe in making our Literacy learning motivating and accessible to all. And for children to use the skills they have in all areas of the curriculum.
At St Chad’s we make sure that phonics is an important and fun part of our curriculum. We learn phonics in many different ways through the different year groups. The children follow Letters and Sounds and we know that given a solid foundation in phonics, they will continue to build their literacy skills throughout our school and beyond.
Reading is a very important part of our curriculum at St Chad’s. We aim to encourage the children to have a love and enjoyment of reading that will stay with them for life. Children are read to everyday and are exposed to a variety of genres. We include stories in our assemblies, especially the stories about the life of Jesus. The children are invited to use the School Library and we encourage parents in after school to come and choose a book with their child. We follow the Oxford reading Tree reading scheme and children are also encouraged to read their own books at times during the school day.
Children can be supported in many different ways in Literacy. We have Teaching Assistants in every class who work closely with the classroom teacher. They are there to support and advance children’s learning. Children can work in small groups with an adult for support or on a one to one basis depending on the child’s educational needs. This means children are able to develop their learning quickly so that they become more independent in their reading and writing skills. Children in guided groups should be making outstanding progress in that lesson.
Some of the interventions we run in school are:
- Project X-code - a reading intervention
- Precision teaching
- Phonics count
- A before school phonics intervention.
At St Chad’s we are aware that bilingualism is a strength and that EAL pupils have
a valuable contribution to make. We aim to help EAL pupils to become confident and fluent in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing in English in order to be able to fulfil their academic potential.
