The New Mathematics National Curriculum - September 2014

From September 2014, schools across the country will be teaching the new National Cuirriculum that the government has recently released.

In the new Maths Curriculum there are many changes including a larger focus on number. There is also the requirement for each pupil to meet all the objectives for their year group before they move into the next year group.

The New Curriculum is set out into 6 sections:

Number - including Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division and fractions (including Decimals in Years 4, 5 and 6)

Measurement

Ratio and proportion (Year 6 only)

Algebra (Year 6 only)

Geometry - including Position and Direction

Statistics

By the time the children are at the end of Year 3 they must be able to use a formal written method for all operations and the differentiated outcomes throughout the years will be the size of the numbers the children are using.

Mental Maths

At St. Chad's Catholic Primary School, we are committed to our children developing good mental maths strategies. So Since September 2013, our children have been participating in a daily 20 minute mental maths session called CLIC.

CLIC stands for:

C - Counting

L - Learn It's

I - It's nothing new

C - Calculations

At the end of the week the children then participate in 2 mental maths tests called the 'Beat That' test and the 'CLIC' test. The 'CLIC' test involves the children answering 10 key maths questions. When they get 10 out of 10 over 3 consecutive weeks they can move on to the next test paper. There are 5 of these tests and they get progressively harder.

The second test is the 'Beat That' test and it involves the children answering a set of 'Learn It' questions in a set time.

Both tests provide children with fun and motivational ways to track their own progress and set their own targets for Mathematics. Children are constantly challenged to increase their own score and in the 'Beat That' test  - 'That' stands for their best score ever.
